OCEAN BEACH SURF AND SKATE GRAND OPENING KICK-OFF SKATE JAM

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the new store front, located one block from the beach at 4976 Newport Avenue, formerly Rock, Paper, Scissors. The Grand Opening Kick-Off Skate Jam will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the parking lot behind the shop, between Newport Avenue and Santa Monica Avenue.

After 10 years at the previous shop location on the corner of Newport Avenue and Cable Street, Ocean Beach Surf and Skate finally made their move to a larger location, a block closer to the beach on January 1, 2010. Taking only a week to move the entire shop, Ocean Beach Surf and Skate opened their doors at the new location on January 8, 2010. The new shop features a full parking lot next to the building for customers, a brand new shaping room, high ceiling displaying, owner, Rodger Caldwell’s large collection of classic surfboards and unlimited retail space.

The Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Grand Opening Kick-Off Skate Jam event will feature a street course skate ramp set-up for open skate session, a skate contest, live musical performances, vendor booths, parking lot sales, raffles and a silent auction all to benefit the Kona-California Scholarship (KCS), a fund that provides students from West Hawaii high schools a scholarship that will assist them in their dream to study in California after graduation.

The skate contest will kick off at 12:00 noon and will consist of a best trick contest and a game of skate, with open skate sessions and pro demos held before and after the skate contest. Skate contestants will be competing to win great prizes from our generous sponsors including, Cali’s Finest, Sector Nine, Prophecy Skateboards, ERGO, Globe, Pig, Toy Machine, Zoo York and many more.

While watching the skate contest and demos, participants will groove to live musical performances from local San Diego artists including Hazmatt (punk/reggae), Stick Figure (roots/reggae), The WATCHLIST (rock/indie) and the South Bay Wailers (roots/reggae). Presented by Cali’s Finest and Primo Beer, the event will also feature a signing by pro surfer, Adam Knox while Age of Aquarius (rock/punk band) will rock out. That’s not all though; vendor booths, Indo Board demos and blow-out, parking lot sales will rally round this kick-off event!

To help aid in the fundraising of the KCS, Ocean Beach Surf and Skate and the KCS have reached out to the local community, collecting incredible gifts for a silent auction and raffle. All proceeds from the auction and raffle will be donated to the KCS, as will the $5 skate contest entry fee. Keeping this event green and environmentally friendly with their recycle bins is NuCycle Recycling and Waste Solutions, a San Diego based company that is committed to making the process of recycling easy, and provide the necessary training, and tools for businesses to implement a successful, cost effective recycling program into current operations.
The Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Grand Opening Kick-Off event is FREE and open to the public. The skate contest is open to all ages and there will be a $5 donation for contest entry. Contestants can register at Ocean Beach Surf and Skate or on the day of the event. The open skate session is free and helmets will be permitted for all skaters under 18 years old.
