The Second Annual Skate for the Kids fundraiser has been rescheduled for this Saturday, January 28, 2012! Although we were rained out last weekend, this Saturday's forecast calls for sunshine and warm temperatures, so it's bound to be an amazing day for our pro meet and greet, BBQ and raffle. Join Ocean Beach Surf & Skate and Ocean Beach Elementary at Robb Field from 11:00am to 3:00pm for some sweet skating, delicious food and fantastic raffle prizes. Remember, all proceeds are going to OB Elementary so this is a phenomenal opportunity to have fun and give back to the community. Join Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, premier skate and apparel companies and local skateboard pros to raise money for local school, Ocean Beach Elementary. On Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, OB Surf & Skate will host our 2nd Annual Skate for the Kids fundraiser at Robb Field Skate Park. This stellar event will feature a meet and greet with pro skateboarders, a tasty BBQ with food provided by Hodad's and a huge raffle with prizes from our sponsors and local businesses, Dizm, Syndrome, West, Electric, Jedidiah, Mostic, Sector 9, Tum Yeto, Vox, Shorty's, VAS, NHS, Hodad's, Blue Parrot, The Harp and more!

All proceeds raised from this event will be donated to Ocean Beach Elementary in an effort to counteract recent budget cuts and to bolster programs including music and art instruction, academic enrichment activities, family entertainment and student recognition events. As part of the 32^nd Annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade, OBSS, Silly Girl, Original Betty and A.W.O.L. are teaming up to present this awesome skate jam in the OB Pier parking lot featuring open skate sessions, a skate contest, a ladies only skate contest and amazing prizes from Globe, Vox, Almost, Body Glove, Toy Machine, Creature, Independent and many more.

With help from Ocean Experience Surf School, the Braille Institute students learned to stand-up paddleboard (SUP) in Mission Bay, breaking the visual barrier of this popular board sport. The courage and passion the Braille Institute portrayed made this clinic an extraordinary and enriching experience for both the students and instructors alike. This year marks the 20th Anniversary for this annual event which helps bring awareness to the pollution problem along San Diego's coastline. Presented by the Surf Rider Foundation, the Paddle For Clean Water is a non-competitive event that consists of over 1000 local surfers and ocean enthusiasts paddling around the Ocean Beach Pier all supporting the cause. The event is a free and is open to all ages and abilities with any human-powered paddle craft. Ocean Beach Community Clean-up with Ocean Minded!

What better way to kick off your weekend than with some good karma? Join Ocean Beach Surf & Skate and Ocean Minded for our first-ever, Ocean Beach Community Clean-up!

Seeing as OB is small beach town, it's inevitable that any trash in our streets will eventually end up in our ocean and that's why Ocean Beach Surf & Skate has teamed up with Ocean Minded to help keep our beaches AND community clean! Grab a bucket and help clean the streets of OB between 3pm - 5pm this Friday.

You can help out for however long as you'd like and we'll be giving away free swag to all of our participants! We'll also be BBQ'n in the parking lot, playing some fun games with Ocean Minded and the skate ramps will be set-up for those who'd like to get some shredding in!

Local Surf School Breaks the Barriers for Visually Impaired Students through the Enriching Experience of Surfing!

Ocean Experience Surf School and Braille Institute San Diego unite for the 11th annual surf camp for visually impaired students on Monday, July 18 – Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Located at Mission Point and South Mission Beach Jetty, this three-day surf camp truly breaks the barriers faced by Braille Institute students.

The focus of this program is to provide the visually impaired students, the opportunity to experience the joy and thrill of surfing. With a step-by-step surf skill progression and through the use of adaptive equipment, Braille Institute campers will explore all the fundamentals of surfing, including: balance training on the Indo Board, paddling progression, the "pop up", catching waves, water safety and oceanography.

"The lessons essentially bring together the adaptive skills we teach in our program," said Katie Wischmeyer, youth services manager at Braille Institute San Diego. "Knowing this, the instructors at Ocean Experience are great at ensuring all steps are done to make the surf camp accessible to our young surfers."

Through Ocean Experience’s surf training program, each camper walks away with a newfound sense of confidence. The quality instruction and use of adaptive equipment ensures success for all students, building a sense of accomplishment that in turn, builds self-assurance.

"Our young students love any activity that is both educational and fun," said Wischmeyer. "Couple that with this surf camp, and the resulting experience encompasses what we at Braille Institute wish for all our students: Independence."

In addition to surf camp, Braille Institute also offers various activities that continuously teach students how to adapt to a sighted world. Other events held annually are white-water rafting, camping and jet skiing. Braille Institute’s Car Rallye is also held every August where each student with brailled directions team up with a driver to navigate them to the finish line.

If any town knows how to celebrate summer, it’s Ocean Beach! Each year, thousands of people head to Newport Avenue on the Saturday following Summer Solstice for live music, entertainment, unique vendors, talented artists, thrilling rides, refreshing beer gardens, and a skateboard competition for the one and only: Annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off! This one-of-a-kind festival kicks off on Saturday, June 25, 2011 from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm, located on the 4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue and surrounding streets in Ocean Beach.

As one of the festival's largest attractions, Ocean Beach Surf & Skate is proud to present the 7th Annual Skate Jam & Wall Ride Contest at the OB Street Fair. Since OBSS relocated to their new building at 4976 Newport Avenue in 2010, they have expanded this annual skateboard competition by utilizing their private parking lot located directly in the heart of the street fair.

New to this year’s competition is the Wall Ride Contest, designed and built by skate legend, Neil Heddings. Sponsored by LURKVILLE, the Wall Ride Contest will add a whole new dynamic to the contest by featuring two ramps propped up against the OBSS building, creating a 25-foot wall ride. The Wall Ride Contest will kick-off just after the Skate Jam from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m and the 1^st place winner will receive cash prize.

The street course Skate Jam will begin at 1 p.m. and division winners will take home prizes from sponsors: Sector 9 Skateboards, LURKVILLE Skateboards, FlexDex Skateboards, Creature Skateboards, OJ Wheels, Independent Trucks, Enjoi Skateboards, Almost Skateboards, Globe Footwear, Aerial7 Headphones, IPATH Footwear, DIZM Eyewear and more! The skate event will also feature live demonstrations by LURKVILLE team riders and the all-girl skate team, Girls Skate OB from 12noon – 1 p.m. Pro skateboarder, Neil Heddings, will also make a guest appearance and sign autographs along with the original betty and skateboard’s first woman “Hall of Famer,” Patti Mcgee.

In addition to skateboarding activities, the OBSS parking lot will feature music by the local, Direct Drive DJ’s with Destructo Bunny and booths with games and free swag from OBSS vendors including: Sector 9 Skateboards, LURKVILLE Skateboards, Body Glove, Ocean Minded, Keep-A-Breast, FlexDex Skateboards, Original Betty, Silly Girl and AWOL.

The OBSS 7th Annual Skate Jam and Wall Ride Contest is open to all ages and abilities and helmets are required for all participants under 18 years old. All contestants will receive an official contest t-shirt FREE with entry. Entry fees for day-of sign-ups are $5 for the Skate Jam and $10 for the Wall Ride Contest, which will go towards the cash prize for the 1st place winner. Contestants can save money by pre-registering however. Pre-registration discounts are as follows: $10 entry fee for both contests if registered on or before June 24, 2011; or free entry to both contests with any purchase of $30 or more in skateboard gear at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. OB Surf & Skate Hosts Skate Demo at the OB Beach Ball this Saturday!

Grab your friends and head down to Ocean Beach for the first annual, OB Beach Ball, a live music and craft beer festival, this Saturday, May 21, 2011. From human haulin' and beach volleyball to skateboarding and mechanical bull riding, the Beach Ball will featuring a variety of games in addition to a micro brew tasting, bloody mary party and music festival.

The OB Beach Ball will span from the Pier Parking Lot, where the micro brew and music festival will be held, to Saratoga Park, where Ocean Beach Surf and Skate will host the event's skateboard exhibit. Located next to the 70-foot Ferris Wheel and the mechanical bull, the skateboard demonstration will feature open skate sessions, Indo Board demonstrations and a surf simulator. Vendors will also be throwing out some free shwag and a grom contest is in the works!

(Cardiff by the Sea, CA) Champion surfer Rob Machado announces a spring run of US tour dates in support of his film Melali: The Drifter Sessions. Rob Machado and the Melali Sessions Band will kick off their tour on April 5th at the Belly Up in Solana Beach followed by a west and east coast run of shows including Slim's (San Francisco) on April 12th, the historic Troubadour (Los Angeles) on April 14th, and a special performance on April 30th at National Geographic headquarters in Washington, DC as part of their ongoing music themed programs. The film, Melali: The Drifter Sessions showcases some of the world's best wave riders on the best waves Indonesia has to offer. Adding to the level of intensity the film will be accompanied by the live performance of the score. Machado and his long time friend and fellow musician Jon Swift spearhead the musical collective, which includes musicians Todd Hannigan, Fernando Apodaca, Jesse Siebenberg and Sam Bolle.

"When we premiered The Drifter across the country, the best part of the night was the live improvisation with the band to the surf bonus footage," Machado says. "That inspired us to make another movie with the unreleased surf footage and record some music as the score."

Produced by Machado and director Taylor Steele (the godfather of modern surf film), Melali: The Drifter Sessions features Rob Machado - one of the most stylish and skilled wave riders of our time. Melali returns to the fundamentals of surf cinematography by focusing on the surfing experience, the artful relationship between man and surf, and the sharing of this experience with good friends.

Composed in a barn in rural southern California and recorded at Brotheryn Studios in Ojai, the score is a diverse mix of musical compositions ranging from simple ballads to full band improvisations that captures a broad spectrum of moods tailored to the soulful and dynamic surfing.

Saturday, March 5, 2011 will be a day to remember for the Beats by the Beach Festival at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. With warm and sunny weather and help from local businesses, bands and skate brands, this free, philanthropic festival helped raise over $1,750 for the YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS), a non-profit, social service and program provider whose cause is strengthening the community.

Located at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, the festival started and ended with crowds of people and thanks event sponsors, the celebration went off without a hitch. Live music by local bands The New Kenetics, Tommy Dubs, Habitat and Rightjahs Blend drew in people from all directions as did the aroma of freshly grilled burgers, graciously donated by Hodad’s.

The skate jam sponsored by Habitat, Alien Workshop, Typical Culture, Dizm Eyewear, SUPERbrand Apparel also brought skateboarders from all over San Diego. From grom skaters including 6-year-old Bryce Tanner and division winner, Ryan Connors to pro/am riders such as Connor Getzlaff, Blake Spencer and men’s division winner, Tommy Werner, the talent at the skate jam was unbelievable. The art show featuring the work of local artists and students also had a huge pull for the fundraiser, earning over $500 in silent auction bids alone.

“Since we moved to the new location, we have hosted over a dozen events in our parking lot and the Beats by the Beach festival was definitely one of the largest yet,” explains Rodger Caldwell, the owner Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. “Giving back to community is what it’s all about and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the turnout of this event.”

The money raised at the Beats by the Beach Festival will go towards programs at the YFS such as provided emergency shelter and transitional living programs for homeless young adults, a safe place for kids to go after school every day and counseling programs and support to families in times of stress.

Point Loma Surf Movie Premiere and Fundraiser of “Calling on Others: Bali, Indonesia”

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate and The Pearl Hotel are joining forces to host a special fundraising event and movie premiere of Calling on Others: Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. The event will be a special feature for the monthly surf movie event, Surf on the Silver Screen, and will kick off at 7 p.m. at The Pearl Hotel.

Calling on Others is a film project headed by San Diego natives, Scott LeDuc and Andrew Matthews that aims to raise money for underprivileged surfers to continue their education. The project and scholarship fund idea was inspired during a six-week trip LeDuc and Matthews took to Bali, Indonesia in 2009. What began as a surfing expedition quickly became much more when they met four, local talented surfers whose aspirations to stay in school seemed a far-fetched dream. Together, LeDuc and Matthews created the short film, Calling on Others: Bali, Indonesia, which follows the lives of these four boys, in hopes to raise money so that their dream to further their education can become a reality.

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Presents Vault Yoga!

After a month of offering free classes all December long, Ocean Beach Surf and Skate is proud to announce the opening of OB's new non-profit yoga and fitness center: The Vault!

The Vault Yoga and Fitness Center is a group of yoga and fitness teachers who have joined together to bring affordable classes and workshops to the Ocean Beach community. The studio is located inside Ocean Beach Surf & Skate and offers a variety of classes: from the traditional Vinyasa Flow and Hatha yoga to kid’s yoga, yoga for surfers and Indo Yoga- The Vault has something for the whole family!

“Our mission is to bring together a diverse group of teachers that strive to offer affordable healthy practices for self-improvement and overall well-being”

Ocean Experience Surf School and The Vault will also be joining forces to offer a variety of collective programs that will incorporate surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, indo boarding, yoga and much more! Details on these programs will be announced soon.

To raise money to fund Ocean Beach’s new non-profit yoga and fitness center, The Vault is hosting Texas Hold'em Charity Poker Tournament on Sunday, January 30, 2010 at Kristys MVP Sports Bar in Point Loma. Join The Vault to help make classes affordable and improve the health and well being of OB.

6th Annual Holiday Skate Jam

Deck the Halls of Newport Avenue with Ocean Beach Surf and Skate at the 6th Annual Holiday Skate Jam on December 4, 2010. Located at the 31st Annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade and Kids Fun Zone in the OB Pier Parking Lot, the Holiday Skate Jam will feature open skate sessions, a best trick contest and game of skate, as well as amazing prizes from Sector 9, Habitat, Alien Workshop, Dizm Eyewear, Aerial7, Zooyork, PIG Wheels, Toy Machine, Foundation, ERGO, Koastal Skateboards and many more!

The Jam will run from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. but will be closed during the parade from 5:05 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Registration is open to all ages and abilities and is 100% FREE, so stop by Ocean Beach Surf and Skate and fill out an entry form today! Kickflipping Budget Cuts, One Shuv-it at a Time

Despite the rainy-day weather, skaters of all ages and abilities joined forces on October 23, 2010 to battle the budget cuts that local school, Ocean Beach Elementary faced this year. Located at Robb Field Skate Park, the inaugural Skate for the Kids BBQ and Skate Jam was a success and event organizer Ocean Beach Surf and Skate along with sponsors, Alien Workshop, Habitat, Dizm Eyewear, SUPERbrand Apparel, AERIAL7 and Boardwalk Ice Cream Co., couldn’t be happier.

"This was a great opportunity to have fun with the kids and give back to the community, all while raising money for a great cause," says owner of Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, Rodger Caldwell.

Pro and Am skaters including Tosh Townend, Cano Cardenas, Marius Syvanen and Austyn Gillette also came out to support the cause and spend the day with the kids.

"It was awesome to see how excited the kids were to not only meet their role models, but spend the day with them," recalls Ryan Collins, General Manager of Ocean Beach Surf & Skate.

With the help of event sponsors, the raffle alone raised over $1,000 and Boardwalk Ice Cream Co, raised over $200 in ice cream sales, all which was donated to Ocean Beach Elementary School. The donation will be used towards the school’s art and music programs, which due to drastic budget cut, are completely funded by PTA fundraising, gracious donors and special events such as the Skate for the Kids BBQ and Skate Jam.

Knowing that the battle of the budget cuts will be ongoing, Ocean Beach Surf & Skate and event sponsors were excited for the victory of this inaugural event and look forward to the 2nd Annual Skate for the Kids event next fall.

"I am so happy that the Skate for the Kids event was a success- in this economy, anything helps and to be able to give back to the kids of Ocean Beach is amazing," says Lanette Jorgensen, PR Director of Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. "We have seen a huge response from numerous organizations interested in joining the cause so we anticipate very big and exciting things for next year’s event."
