Tony Hawk Continues to Awe Fans with his Signature 900!

It has been 12 years since Tony Hawk made history and landed what is considered to be one of skateboarding's most technically demanding tricks, the 900 in 1999. Now, at age 43, he continues to impress his fans at a demo in Linkoping, Sweden this past Saturday when he landed yet another, 900! Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Launches New Skate Program!

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate, home of OB's only indoor mini-ramp, is proud to announce their new skateboard lesson and camp program! OBSS is now offering daily skateboard lessons as well as a week-long Skate Camp coming this Summer. Skate Camp will be offered during 10 weeks throughout the summer and daily lessons are now available at 4pm, Monday - Friday, and at 10am on Saturday and Sunday. The new skate program will teach students of all ages and abilities the fundamentals of skateboarding, beginner and advanced tricks and maneuvers, ramp, street and bowl riding techniques, dropping-in and much more!

Art, Music and Skateboarding Celebration at Ocean Beach Surf and Skate!

What better way to spend this Saturday than at Beats by the Beach Festival! Located in the parking lot adjacent to Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, this event will be held tomorrow, Saturday, March 5th, and will help raise funds for the YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS) - a non-profit, social service and program provider whose cause is strengthening the community. The family festivities will begin at 11am and will wrap-up by 5pm.

There is something for everyone to enjoy- whether you’re a musician, an artist, a skateboarder, or a philanthropist- there’s nothing better than supporting your community as they have supported you. This fundraising event will feature live local music, such as Habitat, Tommy Dubs, The New Kenetics, and Rightjahs Blend; an art exhibit showcasing donated artwork; a raffle and silent auction, featuring gifts from local businesses including:
Wave House San Diego, Pacific Beach Ale House, Fred’s Mexican Café, Solid Rock Gym, Pizza Port, Healing Arts Massage & Wellness Center, The Day Spa & Salon, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Electric Music Studios, World Famous, Newport Pizza & Ale House, Bicycle Discovery, The Horizon Hotel, Culture Shock Dance Center, PRP Wine International, Ocean Beach Surf & Skate/Ocean Experience Surf School.

There will also be freshly grilled burgers entirely donated by Hodad’s, a face painting booth, an Indo Board interactive booth with surf simulator, and yoga and muay thai workshops. There will also be Open Skate sessions at 11am & 3pm, with a street-course Skate Contest at 1pm, as well as pro/am skateboarder’s Meet & Greet staring Tosh Townend, Cano Cardenas, and more! Last but not least, the Young At Art Children’s Creative Center in Ocean Beach has offered to donate their time to organize a mural for this event which will consist of sponsored art that will be created during the festival, and then displayed inside Ocean Beach Surf & Skate post-event.

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Expands!

Have you been in the new Ocean Beach Surf & Skate? On Monday, September 27, after closing, we began the renovations to the building that would bring down the wall dividing our retail space from the rest of the edifice. Instead of occupying only the western 2,700 square feet, we are now in the whole 7,000 square foot space. When we moved less than a year ago from up the street, owner Rodger Caldwell knew that there was huge potential with the space. For about 10 months we operated in approximately the same size shop as our old 4881 Newport Avenue location, and Caldwell knew we were bursting at the seams and recognized the need for immediate expansion.

Staff came in practically around the clock to aid in tearing down the wall, touching up paint, cleaning, and anything and everything else that went into the expansion. Two days after shutting, we opened in our new incarnation at 4976 Newport Avenue in time for the Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 29, at 3 p.m.

If you have not yet seen our new space, we invite you to come check it out! The new OBSS gives us more floor space to expand our apparel sections, and we are excited to soon be carrying not only denim and skate shoes but also a full youth section. Exciting brands are being brought in to add to the selection. There is a rental section to service the locals and the tourists alike that come to us for surf lessons or to borrow a board for the day. The shop features a lounge area with a foosball table, books, and magazines, and the couches are located with prime viewing of our indoor mini ramp!

We are thrilled to offer our loyal skate customers a local spot to skate, regardless of rain or shine. This is Ocean Beach’s first ever indoor skate park, and it is open to anyone and everyone during business hours. All you need is to sign a release waiver, and to wear protective gear at all times if you are under the age of 18.

“Being able to provide the OB Community- in particular, its youth- a safe spot to skateboard after school or on the weekends, is one of the most rewarding aspects of this expansion,” says Caldwell. “I love seeing how much fun the kids are having on the ramps and am very fortunate that I am able to offer this to them.”

Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour hits San Diego with 25 Tons of Snow!

With summer just around the corner, 25 tons o snow is the last thing you'd expect to see at San Diego's very own, Qualcomm Stadium. Here to shake things up this Friday, May 7, 2010 is the Campus Rail Jam Tour! Kicking off at 5:00 p.m. at the Northeast parking lot areas at the Q, the 2010 Campus Rail Jam will be one action packed event! Not only will they be trucking in 25 tons of snow to build the 25 ft x 100 f skiing and snowboard course, the event will also feature a massive rail jam ski and snowboard contest, a skateboard half pip from Jim Bell Skateboard Ramps, live skateboard demos from Ocean Beach Surf and Skate, Prophecy Skateboards and other pro riders, killer beats dropped by local San Diego DJ's and interactive vendor booths. Rail Jam contestants will all compete for a cash purse and tons of other prizes from snowboards and skis to jackets and boots. Be sure to also stop by Ocean Beach Surf and Skate's booth to demo Indo Boards, enter to win a FREE Prophecy skateboard deck and receive $10 OBSS dollars.
