NEW BRAND ALERT: Pura Vida Bracelets!

No doubt you've seen friends and strangers alike wearing these cool, colorful string bracelets on their wrists.  You may have also seen them in the pages of the Victoria's Secret swim catalog, as well as in the latest issue of Fashion 5.0 Magazine.  That's right, surf and skaters--we've got the exclusive OB offering of Pura Vida Bracelets!

The story goes something like this: Two friends embarked on a post-college graduation/surf trip to Panama and Costa Rica.  They couldn't help but appreciate the laidback lifestyle of the lands.  While in Costa Rica, they met a man name Jorge, who was selling bracelets on the street.  They were vibrant bracelets of a simple construction, and the friends felt these bracelets perfectly summed up their experiences.  The friends asked Jorge to make a large batch of bracelets to bring back stateside, and they quickly befriended Jorge, and since returning to the states, they continue to have Jorge make and send them the bracelets to sell.
Jorge and his friends who now help him are able to provide enough bracelets to be in 100+ surf shops and boutiques nationwide.  They are coming up with new color combinations constantly, so there is one to match everyone personality for sure.

Pura Vida Bracelets was named as such because the phrase "pura vida," a commonly Costa Rican-associated saying, means "pure life" in Spanish.  The simple, unique, handmade pieces embody the "pura vida" spirit of enjoying life slowing, celebrating good fortune, and not taking anything for granted.  Sounds kind of similar to the San Diego spirit, right?  Aptly so, as Pura Vida Bracelets operates right out of nearby Pacific Beach.

Beside being able to help Jorge and his family by providing a stable income, Pura Vida is also a member of 1% for the Planet and donates a portion of its proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation!

We at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate invite you to come in and pick out your own personal Pura Vida Bracelet!  Ocean Beach Surf & Skate is located at 4976 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107.

NEW BRAND ALERT: Locally-based, charitable Jedidiah!

Attention all OBSS shoppers!  There's a new brand in town at your favorite store!

Jedidiah is a humanitarian-based fashion company with a motto of "made for good."  Each season, Jedidiah partners with a different charitable organization and donates proceeds from the retail sales.

We have just gotten in our first Jedidiah items, which include men's and women's tees and tanks (and we'll be getting some sweet Chargers-themed boardies for the guys in June!).  The current partner with Jedidiah is World Vision.  World Vision works to promote the well being of children in crises.  The Jedidiah spring and summer lines' portion of proceeds will be donated to help combat the effects of human trafficking in Central and Southeast Asia.  Jedidiah hopes to raise $50,000, which would enable World Vision to establish an assessment, care, and protection facility that provides first refuge for children rescued from trafficking and exploitation.

The spring and summer lines include apparel that ties in to the World Vision mission.  Photographer Aaron Chang traveled to Cambodia with Jedidiah to capture relevant images, and these images both acted as inspiration for the lines or appear on some of the tees!

We're excited to bring in this new brand!  Not only are they a cool humanitarian brand, but they're based out of San Diego, and OBSS loves supporting local companies!

Come stop in and check out the array of soft tees with vibrant colors and fun, funky prints at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, 4976 Newport Ave, San Diego, CA 92107.  While supplies last, with each Jedidiah purchase receive a free Jedidiah "Made For Good" wristband!

Beats by the Beach Festival Raises over $1,750 for the San Diego's Youth

Saturday, March 5, 2011 will be a day to remember for the Beats by the Beach Festival at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. With warm and sunny weather and help from local businesses, bands and skate brands, this free, philanthropic festival helped raise over $1,750 for the YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS), a non-profit, social service and program provider whose cause is strengthening the community.

Located at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, the festival started and ended with crowds of people and thanks event sponsors, the celebration went off without a hitch. Live music by local bands The New Kenetics, Tommy Dubs, Habitat and Rightjahs Blend drew in people from all directions as did the aroma of freshly grilled burgers, graciously donated by Hodad’s.

The skate jam sponsored by Habitat, Alien Workshop, Typical Culture, Dizm Eyewear, SUPERbrand Apparel also brought skateboarders from all over San Diego. From grom skaters including 6-year-old Bryce Tanner and division winner, Ryan Connors to pro/am riders such as Connor Getzlaff, Blake Spencer and men’s division winner, Tommy Werner, the talent at the skate jam was unbelievable. The art show featuring the work of local artists and students also had a huge pull for the fundraiser, earning over $500 in silent auction bids alone.

“Since we moved to the new location, we have hosted over a dozen events in our parking lot and the Beats by the Beach festival was definitely one of the largest yet,” explains Rodger Caldwell, the owner Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. “Giving back to community is what it’s all about and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the turnout of this event.”

The money raised at the Beats by the Beach Festival will go towards programs at the YFS such as provided emergency shelter and transitional living programs for homeless young adults, a safe place for kids to go after school every day and counseling programs and support to families in times of stress.

"We are very thankful for our sponsors and their help in planning this event,” says Brooke Inman, YSF Site Supervisor at Correia Middle School. “The Beats by the Beach Festival was more than anything we could have imagined and we are thrilled that our fundraising goal was met and nearly doubled!”

Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Expands!

Have you been in the new Ocean Beach Surf & Skate? On Monday, September 27, after closing, we began the renovations to the building that would bring down the wall dividing our retail space from the rest of the edifice. Instead of occupying only the western 2,700 square feet, we are now in the whole 7,000 square foot space. When we moved less than a year ago from up the street, owner Rodger Caldwell knew that there was huge potential with the space. For about 10 months we operated in approximately the same size shop as our old 4881 Newport Avenue location, and Caldwell knew we were bursting at the seams and recognized the need for immediate expansion.

Staff came in practically around the clock to aid in tearing down the wall, touching up paint, cleaning, and anything and everything else that went into the expansion. Two days after shutting, we opened in our new incarnation at 4976 Newport Avenue in time for the Ocean Beach Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 29, at 3 p.m.

If you have not yet seen our new space, we invite you to come check it out! The new OBSS gives us more floor space to expand our apparel sections, and we are excited to soon be carrying not only denim and skate shoes but also a full youth section. Exciting brands are being brought in to add to the selection. There is a rental section to service the locals and the tourists alike that come to us for surf lessons or to borrow a board for the day. The shop features a lounge area with a foosball table, books, and magazines, and the couches are located with prime viewing of our indoor mini ramp!

We are thrilled to offer our loyal skate customers a local spot to skate, regardless of rain or shine. This is Ocean Beach’s first ever indoor skate park, and it is open to anyone and everyone during business hours. All you need is to sign a release waiver, and to wear protective gear at all times if you are under the age of 18.

“Being able to provide the OB Community- in particular, its youth- a safe spot to skateboard after school or on the weekends, is one of the most rewarding aspects of this expansion,” says Caldwell. “I love seeing how much fun the kids are having on the ramps and am very fortunate that I am able to offer this to them.”
Stay tuned for news and updates for the re-opening extravaganza at the new and improved shop!

San Diego's South County and Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Claim Victory at the 2010 Red Bull Rivals Surf Competition

Last Saturday, Red Bull Rivals brought shoulder to head high sets throughout the day. Scores were close and the rivalry heated up as the day went on, but South County came out on top. Team captain of the winning south county team Josh Morse says, "Red Bull Rivals was a super unique format that brought out the best talent in both regions but more than anything it boosted South County's camaraderie as well as the team's confidence. It also legitimized our representation within the surf industry."

Final result:
North County: 144.5
South County: 153.0.

Jeremy Sommerville for North County brought in the highest scoring wave of the day with a 9.0 after hitting three big backside snaps. Second highest scoring wave coming from North County from Sean Marceron with an 8.5 with three backside turns all the way down the beach. Highest combination score of the day goes to South County's Layne Harrison with a combined score of 22.0 with an 8.0 following it up with a 7.0

The Red Bull Rivals format is ten man-on-man heats with tag team format. 20 minute heats with a maximum of five waves and the top two scoring waves going to teams overall score. Losing team gave up four surfboards to the winning team to be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation. Red Bull professional surfer Jamie Sterling says, "Red Bull Rivals was a ‘nice’ way to pit both counties against each other, but deep down inside these guys were going for blood."

South County Team:
Julian Mullins, Layne Harrison, Kyle Knox, Nick Jiampa, Mark Schneider Jr., Justin McBride, Jordan Gaudet, Nick Kovack, Josh Morse, & Nate Cintas.

North County Team:
Jeremy Sommerville, Zach Rhinehart, Steven Moore, Cooper Jones, Austin Ware, Adam Knox, Sean Marceron, Darrell Goodrum, Shey Yates, & Eric McHenry.

RED BULL RIVALS

Support San Diego's South Counties' hottest surfers this Saturday in the Red Bull Rivals!

Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting San Diego’s North and South County locals against each other. Tapping into an area that consistently churns out heavy-hitters in the surf world, the contest will showcase some of the most talented local up-and-comers. Surfers from each county will be invited to battle it out in a head-to-head competition at Ocean Beach for ultimate bragging rights.

Two teams of 10 will be chosen by Ocean Beach Surf and Skate in the South and Quiver Boardworks and Cole Surfboards in the North. Unique to this contest, the surfers will compete in a tag team format, where one surfer from North County and one from South County will enter the water together and surf their best three waves. They will then run to shore and tag a teammate to go out and do the same; judges will score the best two waves of the three for each surfer and at the end of the day the team with the most points wins. The losing team must give up their surfboards to the winning team, and the winning team will then donate the boards to the Surfrider Foundation.

WHO: Twenty of San Diego’s best local surfers, trying to win bragging rights for themselves and their county. Judges will include: Pro surfer Jamie Sterling and ASP qualified (judging) professionals.
